Science
From EYFS, pupils develop curiosity about the world around them and develop inquiring minds that provide a firm foundation for the science curriculum in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
In line with the National Curriculum, pupils at Sir John Moore:
Alongside developing substantive and disciplinary knowledge, pupils at Sir John Moore learn how to work scientifically.
Curriculum topics and working scientifically skills have been mapped so as to ensure full coverage by the end of Key Stage 1 and the end of Key Stage 2, with a three-year cycle providing an enriching learning experience for pupils in our mixed-age classes.
Connecting knowledge
Where possible and purposeful, science learning sequences are connected to pupil learning in other subjects. For example, in Year 2, pupils read Charles Darwin's Around the World Adventure by Jennifer Thermes and write a recount (diary entry) based on Charles Darwin’s journey. These purposeful interconnections with different subjects further develop pupils’ general knowledge and cultural capital beyond their taught science lessons, enabling them to make connections between different curriculum subjects and their own wider knowledge and experiences.
Our new curriculum approach supports pupils in making links across their own educational journeys too. For example, pupils in Year 6 will build on their prior knowledge of Charles Darwin’s scientific discoveries when learning about evolution and inheritance, as well as reading Darwin’s Dragons by Lindsay Galvin and writing about Darwin’s experiences.
