Design Technology
Design and Technology at Sir John Moore C.E. Primary School
At Sir John Moore, we use KAPOW Primary to deliver a dynamic and engaging Design and Technology (D&T) curriculum. This ensures learning is well-sequenced and pupils have the opportunity to build on their skills year by year. Through KAPOW, children experience hands-on, practical learning that fosters creativity, problem-solving, and resilience, preparing them for the challenges of the modern world.
Our D&T curriculum is designed to be exciting, purposeful, and relevant, giving pupils the chance to design, make, and evaluate projects across a variety of disciplines. These include mechanisms, structures, textiles, electrical systems, and cooking and nutrition. Each unit is carefully crafted to encourage children to apply their knowledge of materials, tools, and techniques in real-world contexts.
Key Features of Our D&T Curriculum:
- Progression and Continuity: Learning is structured to build on prior knowledge and skills, ensuring pupils deepen their understanding as they move through the school.
- Practical Application: Pupils tackle real-life challenges, designing solutions with specific users and purposes in mind.
- Cross-Curricular Links: Opportunities to connect D&T with subjects such as science, maths, and art enhance pupils' learning experiences.
- Teamwork and Independence: Collaborative projects encourage pupils to work together, while also developing their individual creativity and initiative.
What Makes Our D&T Curriculum Special?
- Engaging Projects: From building moving vehicles to designing electronic systems or creating nutritious recipes, our D&T lessons are hands-on and fun.
- Real-World Contexts: Pupils are encouraged to think like engineers, architects, chefs, and designers, applying their skills to solve real-world problems.
- Creative Thinking: Children are inspired to take creative risks, experiment, and learn from their mistakes in a safe, supportive environment.
- Focus on Sustainability: Pupils learn about the importance of sustainable design, considering how their projects impact the environment.
Our D&T curriculum also introduces children to famous designers, engineers, and innovators, helping them to understand the impact of design and technology on society.
By the end of their time at Sir John Moore, pupils will have developed:
- The ability to think critically and innovate.
- Confidence in using a wide range of tools and materials.
- A deeper understanding of the design, make, and evaluate cycle.
- Key life skills such as teamwork, time management, and adaptability.
At Sir John Moore, we believe that Design and Technology is an essential part of a broad and balanced curriculum, equipping our pupils with skills for the future while igniting a lifelong passion for creativity and innovation. With KAPOW as our guide, we aim to inspire the next generation of problem-solvers and makers to truly "Climb to New Heights Together."
