Music

Music at Sir John Moore C.E. Primary School

At Sir John Moore, we are passionate about fostering a love for music in all our pupils. Using the Leicestershire Music Hub Scheme, our music curriculum is structured to provide high-quality, progressive, and engaging learning opportunities that inspire creativity and self-expression. This scheme ensures every child has the chance to develop their musical abilities while enjoying the journey of exploring sound, rhythm, and melody.

What Does Music Look Like at Sir John Moore?

  • Progressive Learning: Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so pupils build on their musical knowledge and skills year by year, from early rhythm and pitch exploration to more complex composition and performance techniques.
  • Diverse Genres and Cultures: Pupils experience a rich variety of musical styles, traditions, and genres, broadening their understanding and appreciation of global music.
  • Practical and Fun: Music lessons are hands-on, incorporating singing, playing instruments, composing, and performing in a way that is engaging and enjoyable for every child.

Key Features of the Leicestershire Music Hub Scheme:

  • Singing and Vocal Development: Pupils are encouraged to develop their singing voices, learning about pitch, harmony, and rhythm through group and solo performances.
  • Instrumental Skills: Children explore a range of instruments, including tuned and untuned percussion, recorders, and ukuleles. Opportunities for whole-class ensemble teaching (WCET) introduce pupils to instruments such as violins or brass.
  • Music Theory and Composition: The scheme introduces children to the basics of notation, rhythm patterns, and melodic composition, empowering them to create their own music.
  • Listening and Appraising: Pupils develop critical listening skills, learning to appreciate the nuances of famous composers, contemporary artists, and their peers.

Enriching the Musical Experience:

  • Performance Opportunities: Pupils regularly showcase their talents during assemblies, school productions, and community events, helping them build confidence and stage presence.
  • Collaboration with Specialists: Through the Leicestershire Music Hub, children benefit from workshops, visiting musicians, and access to high-quality resources and expertise. Please see below.
  • Celebrating Creativity: Pupils are encouraged to express themselves through music, fostering creativity and emotional well-being.

Why is Music Important?

We believe music plays a vital role in developing key skills such as teamwork, resilience, and self-discipline. It also nurtures emotional literacy, creativity, and cultural awareness, giving pupils a well-rounded education.

By the time pupils leave Sir John Moore, they will have:

  • Experienced the joy of creating and performing music.
  • Developed confidence in their musical abilities.
  • Gained a foundation in music theory and instrumental skills.
  • Explored a wide range of musical styles and cultures.

At Sir John Moore, music is more than a subject—it is a way for pupils to connect, express themselves, and experience the joy of creativity. Through the Leicestershire Music Hub Scheme, we aim to ensure every child feels the rhythm of success and climbs to new heights in their musical journey.

Leicestershire Music Hub - Specialist Teaching

We are part of the Leicestershire music hub (LMH) for primary schools.

This service gives Whole Class Instrumental Tuition (WCIT) involves weekly, 45 minute lessons being delivered to 2 classes (Yews and Elms class (Y3-5), so that all pupils in the class learn at the same time.

Lessons take place in the hall or classroom (depending on the size of the instruments!), led by LMH staff and take place every week for the whole year.

This is to ensure that pupils are able to form a strong bond with music to help enthuse and inspire them to take their music making further.
